My goal for the UpSideOfAging.com is to present the potential of aging without giving aging a definition. I don’t want boundaries – not just yet. I’m excited about getting older – it’s a new journey for me. I expect to learn a great deal. I expect there will be times when I’m going to have to laugh at myself. And I know there will be other times when I may shed a few tears.
My hope is that you and other readers will join me and participate on this journey
My intent is to embrace a range of topics: friendships, family issues, news of cutting edge research on health and wellness issues, the politics of aging including ageism, spirituality and the psychology of aging. I want this blog to include personal stories about experiences in aging.
I’m convinced there is so much more to getting older than the box we make for ourselves. I want to embrace whatever that may be before it’s time for the Big Box!
My plan is to interview others in related fields and sharing their expertise about aging issues. Join me in meeting the challenges that come with looking at the upside of aging.
My interest in the elderly began when I volunteered one day a week for two summers when I was 12 and 13 years old at the nursing home where one of our neighbors worked as a nurse.
My second encounter took place when an ophthalmologist asked me to help him transform his practice from general ophthalmology to a cataract specialist. At the time I worked for a private school doing public relations and fund raising. I helped him make the change and he was extremely successful. It finally dawned on me that there must be a huge market of older people.
So I decided to return to school and earned a post masters certificate in Gerontology. The first thing I did was applied my writing skills primarily to the health issue of aging as a free lance writer. That topic gradually evolved to include health across generations.
The Upside of Aging marks my refocus on aging issues. It's like I've come full circle.
I am a strong supporter of the concept that if you don’t use it, you lose it. My goal, as I age, is to use everything I have plus some. I want to give good information about how to stay healthy. I plan to write about the importance of maintaining friends. I’d like younger generations to know that just because I’m getting old doesn’t mean I can’t think anymore … or feel...or be whimsical.
My plan is to enjoy this trip, to discover who I’m going to be, and to make the most of this roller coaster ride called aging.
